Electrical Permits | Do you need to get one for your ADT Security System?
A question that is often raised by ADT customers is whether or not they need an electrical permit to have their ADT security system installed. Although to some this may not seem like a very important matter it is in actuality one that could be very costly if not addressed. Whether you live in Miami, Orlando or even Tallahassee you are required to get an electrical permit prior to installing your
ADT security system.
Why is an Electrical Permit required?
While many people will say that cities are requiring electrical permits for security systems as a means of generating revenue, nothing could be further from the truth. Anytime high voltage or low voltage wiring is run inside of a home an electrical permit is required. This is actually for the benefit of the homeowner. If done improperly the wiring run throughout the home could possibly be a fire hazard. And that is ultimately the concern of city officials. Life safety is in reality the main reason electrical permits are required in the state of Florida. In fact the Florida Department of Building and Professional Regulation has an Electrical Board developed to enforce the issuing of electrical permits for every security system job performed in Florida.
Who Determines how the Work is Performed?
It is the cities responsibility as the authority having jurisdiction to enforce the issuance and inspection of electrical permits. It is also the local city electrical inspectors who perform the physical inspections to ensure the work was done properly. However, the question still remains as to who determines how the actual work is performed. The actual installation performed by ADT is to be done in conformity to the Florida Building Code and the National Electrical Code. The Florida Building Code stipulates the requirements necessary for someone to be authorized to install security systems and also the specific requirements in the state of Florida. The National Electric Code spells out the specifics of how every installation must be performed. At the end of the day the main reason these two entities exist is life safety. Wiring must be done in a way that will not cause a fire down the road. Wiring must be performed in a way that cannot be damaged either by outdoor elements or physically unintentionally. It is the electrical inspectors responsibility to make sure that the security system was installed in a way that meets all of these standards.
Who is responsible for attaining the Electrical Permit?
Whether ADT corp or an ADT authorized dealer performs the installation of the security system, they are responsible for attaining an electrical permit. An electric permit is required to be pulled prior to the installation. Each city in the state of Florida has individual electrical permit applications. Depending on where you live in Florida the permit can be attained in one day or in some cases several days. In Miami Dade licensed electrical contractors are able to pull an electric permit on line with same day service. In some other cities in Florida you are required to fill out the electric permit application and have it notarized then drop it off at the building and zoning department for approval. Once the permit is approved then the ADT agent will pick it up and deliver it to the job site prior to the
security system installation.
If the Security System is Wireless do I still need an Electrical Permit?
Some cities in Florida are opting to not require an electric permit for wireless security systems. However, the majority of cities in the state of Florida do require you to get a permit even if the security system is wireless. The reason for this is that there is no such thing as a completely wireless security system. If your ADT installer is performing a professional installation it will require him to run several wires within the walls of your home. Even if the system is a wireless system you still need a power wire to a nearby outlet. This power wire is what connects the security system transformer to a live outlet and is what charges the security system back up battery. Even in the simplest of ADT wireless security systems it is necessary to also run a ground wire. The purpose of this ground wire is to actually protect the security system equipment agains damage during power surges and lightning strikes.
Why does my Security System need to be inspected by a City inspector?
There was a time in Miami Dade County that there were so many security systems being installed that the building and zoning inspectors decided to implement an honor system where alarm contractors would pull a permit but it would not be inspected. Out of every 20 or so permits a random homeowner would be contacted so an inspection would be scheduled. The result was very chaotic and disorganized. Homeowners would not respond to the city electrical department demand to make an appointment to inspect the system. And when the electric inspectors actually made it into the homes they would find that the installations were not done to code. This happened because the alarm installers perception was that no one would actually inspect the job so who cares if some short cuts are taken. It is necessary to have an inspector come out and inspect the job to ensure that the job was performed according to code and will not cause a problem down the road.
